In a time when everyone “googles” everyone it’s necessary to stand out from the crowd when applying for a job or starting your own company, applying to a school, or trying to land a new client. A personal online brand is a must for everyone now. It’s the new resume.

I have been advocating for and teaching Personal Branding for many years now. I first saw the World Wide Web in 1994 when the Netscape browser was released. It was for me the first step in a 25-year Digital Marketing journey that continues today and Personal Branding is now more important than ever.  

Who Is Personal Branding For?

Anyone who has any interest in us now, can and does, search for us online. Everyone wants to know who the people are that we want to interview, admit, collaborate with, or hire. We want to know as much about each other as possible before making the decision about who we want to engage and associate with.

The talk is about keeping it clean. It’s about online “hygiene”, if you will and, about telling whomever maybe googling you, who you are and what you are all about – in a positive and authentic way.

If you run a company, small or large, then you need to help your key people register a personal URL (their name or as close as you can get), and put up a website that explains who they are and what they are all about. Your customers are googling to find you and the people that represent you,, and the story they tell about themselves matters – greatly. If we don’t define who we are, others will do it for youus and we may not like what the Internet says about us.

If you google my name, you’ll find over 2,000 references for me. This is the result of years of carefully building my online persona. While it won’t happen overnight, it’s never too late to begin.
